Unified Arts
The production of art and the process by which it is made, whether it is creating a piece of visual art or performing through music or theatre, allows children to develop their creativity in ways that cannot be matched by other subjects. Our goals as educators in the unified arts department include fostering a spirit of creativity and joy, while providing enriching experiences in the arts, that build confidence in our students. We encourage personal expression, curiosity and risk-taking and believe it is important for all children K-12 to study the arts.
We enjoy sharing our experiences with students and exposing them to artists, movements and techniques while teaching them skills necessary to be successful in each area of the arts. We continue to connect real world experiences to the arts and show students how they can connect the arts to their future. We hope our students will have a life-long appreciation of the arts and can learn self expression while discovering something about themselves during the process.
Elementary Art Education
As Art educators, our main goal is to have all students be successful. Every student should have the opportunity to shine in some way.
We begin in elementary school focusing on the usage of elements and principles of art, artist vocabulary and techniques. All of this is applied to simple and appropriate projects and incorporating art history. By the time they leave 5th grade, the students are familiar with certain artists like Picasso and Van Gogh.
Every student can succeed in the arts, once they find the area that best suits them. As artists they should be able to relate to the world around them through the arts and as educators we expose them to various techniques, cultures and mediums which will help them to be successful in many areas of study.
Elementary Music Education
Elementary students engage in singing, movement, composition and the playing of various classroom musical instruments. Class discussions at this age level focus on the music being created and allow students to begin developing their musical vocabulary.
Music literacy is presented and taught in developmentally appropriate ways so that students are empowered to engage in music making. At the end of third grade, students are offered the opportunity to choose a band or string instrument to study. Grade level singing takes place K-5.
