Internet-Enabled Device Information

Starting September 2025, Rye Neck Schools fully implemented Board Policy 5695: Students and Personal Electronic Devices, in alignment with New York State Education Law §2803. 

This law restricts the use of internet-enabled personal devices during the school day in order to support student learning by minimizing distractions. 

Please read the following information to understand how Rye Neck Schools addresses this law. 

What is an Internet-Enabled Device

As defined by the policy, this includes all:

  • Smartphones

  • Tablets or personal computers 

  • Smartwatches

  • Any other device capable of connecting to the internet and enabling the user to access content on the internet, including social media applications.

District-issued Chromebooks used for instruction are not included in this restriction.

Where and When are Devices Prohibited

Under this policy, students may not use personal internet-enabled devices during the school day on all school grounds, including:

  • Classes

  • Homeroom

  • Lunch and recess

  • Study halls or free periods

  • Passing time in hallways 

  • Playgrounds

  • Athletic fields

Where Should Devices Be Stored?

Students are strongly discouraged from bringing devices to school. If brought, they must be silenced and stored in cubbies, lockers, or backpacks.

If students choose to bring a personal device to school, they should have a lock on their lockers. A Master lock with a combination is highly recommended.

Exceptions to the Law

Under the law, students may be permitted to use personal devices when approved by the building principal or designee on a case-by-case basis for the following purposes and with the appropriate documentation from a medical or educational professional:

  • If required by an IEP, 504 Plan, or where required by law;

  • When necessary to manage a student’s medical condition;

  • For translation services;

  • For students who are routinely responsible for the care and wellbeing of a family member; and/or

  • For specific educational purposes with teacher and administrative approval and only through the district’s network, per Policy 4526.
